The first-ever Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Tournament saw the U.S. beat rival Canada twice in four days to claim the gold medal – victories that generally are credited for helping grow the game.
“That team will always be the first to win gold in the Olympics and the victory over Canada in the final game is one of the signature moments in USA Hockey history,” Pat Kelleher, executive director of USA Hockey, said in 2017 when the team was inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame. “The success of our ’98 women’s Olympic team has been a significant catalyst for growth in our sport and their positive impact on the sport continues today.”
Captain Cammi Granato, who had been a member of the national team since 1990, scored the team’s first Olympic goal, starting an opening 5-0 victory over China. The Americans won their next four games of pool play by a combined 28 to 7, including a 7-4 victory over Canada.
In the gold-medal game, Gretchen Ulion and Shelley Looney gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead. After Canada closed within 2-1, Sandra Whyte – who had assisted on the first two U.S. goals – scored into an empty net to clinch the victory.
